Prescription of Lands in Sri Lanka
In Sri Lanka, prescription refers to acquiring ownership of land through long and uninterrupted possession. Under the Prescription Ordinance, a person who has been in continuous, adverse, and exclusive possession of immovable property for over 10 years (against the true owner’s rights) may obtain ownership by prescription. However, such possession must be open, peaceful, and without permission of the lawful owner. At Kasun Karunanayake Associates, we advise and represent clients in land prescription disputes, title investigations, and related property matters to protect their legal rights and interests.
